Workington 2 Blyth Spartans 0
It was not a very productive weekend for Blyth Spartans
who, following a 2-0 defeat by Hyde United at Croft Park on Saturday,
suffered a similar fate in yesterday’s Blue Square North game
at Workington.
In the early stages the Reds pressed for the opener, though there
was temporary respite for Spartans as Michael Hedley headed Gareth
Williams’ free-kick goalwards.
It took Workington just half an hour to make their supremacy count
though. Darren Gullen found Michael Reed who powered past two defenders
before slotting the ball between the advancing Bartlett and the
upright. And it could well have been two shortly afterwards as John
Wright saw his goalbound effort cleared off the line by Andrew Leeson.
Spartans weren’t creating much up front and their best hopes
came from set pieces. Richard Hodgson did get the ball around the
wall from a 25-yard free-kick but his effort flashed wide.
The Reds went two up on 71 minutes. Graham Anthony and substitute
Danny Carmichael opened up the defence for Wright.
