September 15th 2007 - AFC Telford (home)
Blyth Spartans 1 AFC Telford United 2

Spartans will have been, disappointed not to taken at least a point, considering the number of good goal scoring opportunities they created during the match but it is Telford who kept their 8 game unbeaten run going in a end to end match.

It was the home side who created the first opening on only 9 minutes. Scott Bell getting onto a through pass from Graham Fenton, only to see goalkeeper Ryan Young doing well to block Bell’s first shot and then Lee Vaughan clearing his second attempt.

For the visitors Jimmy Turner tried his luck from 30 yards with his effort going well over Adam Bartlett’s cross bar.

The visitors has another let off on 21 minutes. Again Christiensen finding Fenton with a quick throw in, Fenton’s pass infield to Andrew Thompson saw the Blyth midfielder connect well with the ball, only to see his 30 yard effort rebound to safety with keeper Young static in the United goal.

Matty Lewis got his head to a deep cross from the right by Vaughan but his header was never troubling Bartlett.

In fact in the opening half Spartans looked the most likely to take a lead, with Chris McCabe beaten the offside trap to again set up Bell who completely miss kicked from only 6 yards out.

Spartans again thought they had taken the lead, Fenton’s well weighted centre was met at the far post by Peter Snowdon, this time a defender cleared off the line.

A Simon Forsdick free kick was weakly cleared by Snowdon, but Turner’s effort was well held by Bartlett.

The home however went to sleep on the stroke of half time, a long throw in from the right wasn’t dealt with and Lee Moore saw the ball hit the back of his head and go over the advancing Bartlett.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first with Spartans creating the better chances, and Fenton finding the head of Richard Forster who flicked the ball onto the onrunning Bell, he again found himself free of the last defender and with only Young to beat hammered his effort into the side netting.

But on 54 minutes from a set piece, Spartans got their deserved equaliser. A Thompson free kick on the left edge of the penalty area saw captain Snowden rise at the far post to head home.

They always saw say who are always at your vulnerable just after you have scored. With McCabe limping out of the action and the home side unable to bring a sub straight on, United took full advantage. Jamie Jagielka floated a deep ball to the far post which Lewis headed back across goal for defender Turner to tap home.

Spartans rallied in the closing 20 minutes and will count themselves unlucky not to grab an equaliser. Thompson again with a free Kick found the head of Snowdon who appealed of a penalty after a hand ball in the area. Then Christiensen got onto a Bell cross field pass only to blast over from just outside the penalty area.
