Blyth Spartans ''A''

HECTIC RUN IN

Blyth Spartans A won the North East Amateur Charity Shield Winners, after defeating Walker Central 1-0 at Dunston Federation.

Blyth Spartans "A" have a hectic run in to the end of the season. With four and a half weeks left Spartans are still in with a chance of promotion and still in a cup final. The league has extended the season to 7th May and if spartans want to do the double they have 9 league games and the final before that date. There are still some hard games to come but lets hope they can keep it going.

Blyth Spartans “A” win through to the final of the North East Amateur Shield (league cup). After falling at the semi final stage last season Steve Brown’s side were hoping to go all the way this time. But things went from bad to worse in the week leading up to the semi final when Steve learnt he had 6 players missing (Barry & Andrew-injured, Euan-work, Bryan-holiday, Brynden & Ash-cup tied) for their biggest game of the season so far. "We asked the players available to go out and show a good account of themselves and not just accept defeat" said Steve. This they certainly did. Kicks had few chances and Spartans could have been 3 up by half time but the lack of strikers was there for all to see.

The second half went much the same as the first and we were preparing for extra time. There were tired legs out there but the lack of subs meant we were restricted. Then 10 minutes from time came a wonder goal by Marti (pictured) worthy of winning any game.

Now to hold on, which the lads did even though the referee found 8 minutes from somewhere to add on. Well done lads. It just goes to show that when the odds are stacked against you players will pull together and play for each other.

Blyth Spartans "A" are enjoying a good season so far. The bad weather has meant a back log of games still to play. With 13 league games and a semi final to fit in before the end of the season its going to be a tough run in. If we can get through the semi final we will be in the North East Amateur Shield final.

As of February 2008 the Spartans "A" team are lying 3rd, 3 points behind the leaders with 3 games in hand. Lets hope we can keep it going and hope that playing 2 & 3 games a week towards the end of the season won't cost us promotion.

Blyth Spartans "A" are enjoying a very good start to their second season in the Tyneside Amateur League. After a poor March put pay to any promotion hopes last season manager Steve Brown strengthend the squad during the close season.

The team are currently lying top of their league after nine games and are still in three cup competitions. Pictured below are this seasons squad in their new strips sponsored by Redhead Roofing.
