Blyth Spartans are hoping to boost their attendances by offering
Newcastle supporters an alternative to shopping or DIY every other
Saturday.
A unique billboard campaign is launched next week on the doorstep
of Newcastle United’s St. James’ Park. A giant poster
will encourage Newcastle fans to support the Blue Square North club
when the Magpies are playing away from home.
The poster, which is supported by Spartans’ club sponsor
Carlsberg, features a picture of Blyth’s celebrated 1977/78
team with the slogan ‘Probably the most famous non league
football team in the world’. The quote is based on one made
by former FA Secretary Ted Croker following Blyth’s historic
season which saw them lose to Wrexham at St. James’ Park in
front of over 42,000 fans when a win would have seen the local side
take on Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter finals.

Spartans Vice Chairman Kevin Scott said “The poster will
be on site for three Newcastle home games and includes the line
‘When the black and whites are away support the green and
whites’. If we can attract only 1% of ‘Mags’ to
come to Croft Park to watch us the additional support and income
would enable us to push for full Blue Square Premier status –
which would be great for the whole region.
“Non league football at our level can be a really enjoyable
experience – there are good players and you’re really
close to the action. I would certainly encourage everyone, families
included, to try it.”
