13 Feb 2006 - Spartans and St Wilfred's RC Middle School

A local football club has been working in an innovative partnership with a neighbouring school.

Blyth Spartans General Manger Ian Evans has been visiting the town’s St. Wilfred’s RC Middle School to assist with their “Economic Activity” course. “ The school were interested in using the Club to show how a local business works. We went through issues surrounding the siting of businesses, the structure of the Club, the finances and, finally, the other community work which the Spartans get involved in. I’m used to dealing with adult footballers and I have to say that it was a challenge, but also a pleasure, to work with 80 12/13 year olds!” he said.

Teacher Mrs Swinburne commented, “Using the medium of football brought the topic alive. The programme of lessons proved to be very successful and our pupils certainly got a lot out of it. It has also opened their eyes to the fact that you don’t have to be good enough to be a player to get a job in the sport – there are numerous other opportunities. “Two young people from the group have been so enthused that they are taking the topic further by focusing, in more detail, on the workings of the Spartans” she added.
